What are GIA diamonds?

When investing in diamonds or buying diamond jewellery, you will often hear the term “GIA diamonds” — but what does it actually mean? In this guide, we give you insights into the expert diamond agency and cover the following topics:

  • What is the GIA?
  • What is a GIA diamond?
  • GIA diamonds price: Do certified diamonds cost more?

What is the GIA?

GIA stands for the Gemological Institute of America. It’s a non-profit organisation that focuses on research and education about gemstones and gemstone jewellery. Since the 1930s, the GIA has been one of the leading authorities on all things diamond-related. The GIA is responsible for the development of some of the best innovations in the jewellery business, including the gemological microscope.

In the 1940s, GIA established the famous 4Cs of diamond quality and the International Diamond Grading System – which remains the worldwide standard for evaluating diamond quality.

What is a GIA diamond?

A GIA diamond is a term used to describe diamonds that have been graded by GIA. Using scientific procedures, GIA diamond experts asses the diamond’s 4 Cs — colour, clarity, cut and carat weight — to give an accurate insight into the quality of the stone.

It is important to note that GIA does not mine, buy, sell or trade diamonds commercially. It neither appraises diamonds and is not otherwise involved in diamond pricing or valuation. GIA operates independently of these commercial interests to ensure that its diamond quality assessments are objective and unbiased.

GIA-graded diamonds provide an extra layer of protection for buyers, in that the grading reports will provide a clear depiction of the diamond’s quality. In this way, you will know exactly what you are paying for — and if the diamond is a wise investment.

GIA diamonds price: Do certified diamonds cost more?

There is a common misconception that the price of GIA diamonds is more than non-certified stones. However, this is not true.

GIA diamonds are simply graded by the institution to offer an insight into the diamond’s quality. It is the reported quality of the GIA diamond that will affect the price tag, not the fact that it is a “GIA diamond”.

Furthermore, it is not expensive to obtain a grading report from GIA and most reputable diamond sellers will ensure their stones are certified by GIA (or another reputable laboratory) to reassure buyers of the quality.

At BNT Diamonds, we recommend buying investment diamonds that come with a grading report in order to ensure a smooth resale in the future. Plus, without it, you risk over-paying for low-quality diamonds.
